Check out our menagerie of animals, created by Joan (Marsala) Morse using empty walnut shells and other craft materials
These adorable creatures, which will be on display throughout November in the glass display cases in the library’s lobby, were made by Joan (Marsala) Morse, a lifetime resident of Hillsdale.
Joan first began crafting some simple walnut animals to send to her daughter in college to bridge the distance between them. A couple of decades later, she started creating them again for her granddaughter. After retiring, she had time to create even more whimsical and elaborate walnut animals to surprise and delight her granddaughter whenever she came to visit.
A lifelong crafter, Joan always saw the world and the materials around her as potential art projects. She upcycled many items including bowling pins, light bulbs, and paintbrushes into beautiful seasonal crafts, and her annual Christmas decoration was a highly anticipated gift among family and friends.
