A CHILDREN’S GARDEN IS GROWING AT THE HILLSDALE LIBRARY
HILLSDALE, N.J. – The “Kids 4 Earth Garden” has been planted and is growing in a sunny spot next to the Hillsdale Library. This community garden is a learning garden for children, and is being maintained by the Hillsdale Kids for Earth chapter. The children spend time weeding, watering, and learning: how to plant seeds and thin them, how to care for the plants, and – hopefully – how to harvest the mature vegetables.
The garden has been a joint effort, with contributions from many sources: David Franz, Hillsdale Library director, generously agreed to allow the K4E chapter a spot for the garden, as well as access to water. Frank Pizzella and Meredith Kates of the Hillsdale Environmental Commission coordinated with Pat Delehanty of the Hillsdale DPW to provide compost and wood chips for the garden. Members of the Hillsdale United Methodist Church volunteered their time to carve out planting beds and paths. To complete the garden, Anchor Fence donated and installed a wooden picket fence and gate.
Anyone visiting the library is welcome to stop by and see the garden. Children that are interested in participating in the garden can contact Kids for Earth at contact@kidsforearth.com. K4E is a local non-profit organization dedicated to teaching people to live sustainably in the modern world. Their mission is to “Be the Solution, Unite for Earth!”
