This book takes place in 1932. It is about a girl named Jessilyn and how her best friend Gemma loses her parents in a fire so Jessilyns father vows to take care of her as his own, despite the fact that Gemma is black and prejudice is prevalent in their small town in Virginia. It doesn’t take long for this scene to attract the KKK who make their lives increasingly more dangerous.
