Join us in January to discuss We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas, a New York Times 2014 Notable Book.  Born in 1941, Eileen Tumulty is raised by her Irish immigrant parents in Queens, in an apartment where the mood swings between heartbreak and hilarity.  When Eileen meets scientist Ed Leary, she thinks she’s found the perfect partner to deliver her to the world she longs to inhabit.  Eileen quickly discovers he doesn’t aspire to the promise of the American Dream. She encourages her husband to want more, but as times passes it becomes clear that his growing reluctance is part of a deeper psychological shift.

“Thomas’s emotional truthfulness combines with the novel’s texture and scope to create an unforgettable narrative.” (Sept.)-Publishers Weekly Review
