Teen Book Recommendation #3: The Thin Executioner by Darren Shan
Book Stats:
page count: 496
pub date: 08/01/2010
genre: fantasy / adventure / retelling
age group: teen
My Rating: 5/ 5 stars*
Why am I recommending this book?:
Have you read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn? You know that classic adventure by Mark Twain? Yeah….I haven’t either.
The Thin Executioner is a retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but you don’t have to have read the original to enjoy it. Darren Shan, author of several series including Cirque Du Freak, The Demonata, & Zom-B, tries for something a lot less horror-y this time around and does a fantastic job.
Jebel Rum is the son of the Executioner, a position revered by all and sought after by many – now that Jebel’s father is close to retiring. Jebel wants to take his father’s place, but he has no chance against his competition. Hoping to tip the odds in his favor, Jebel sets out on a journey that he hopes will enable him to obtain powers beyond those of mortal men.
Jebel’s journey is nothing short of epic. The book is almost 500 pages, but it doesn’t feel like it. Jebel’s adventures keep the story moving at a fast pace, and you’ll be done before you know it, while still looking for more.
*a note on my rating system: I go by the rates I use on goodreads.com, which are as follows:
1 star = did not like it
2 stars = it was okay
3 stars = liked it
4 stars = really liked it
5 stars = it was amazing
Anything a 3 or above is worth reading, in my opinion. I’ve read a lot of books that I have given 3 stars to, and I don’t regret any of them.
