This week’s sign… is really special. You may have missed the news announced late last December, so here is the press release we issued regarding a very generous gift to the Hillsdale Free Public Library:
HILLSDALE LIBRARY TO RECEIVE $ 1 MILLION GIFT
The Board of Trustees of the Hillsdale Free Public Library has announced that the Library will benefit from a $1 million gift from the Gayle and Paul Gross Foundation. The donation, which will be funded over the next few years, is intended to “support new or expanded Library programs and initiatives” with an eye toward innovations which will attract and involve all aspects of the Hillsdale community. The Trustees are in the process of establishing a Library Foundation to manage these funds, along with future donations. It is anticipated that the Foundation will supplement the existing outstanding community efforts of the Library’s Friends organization. In recognition of the gift, the building which houses the Library, located at 509 Hillsdale Avenue, will be rededicated as the “Gayle and Paul Gross Building.”
As a young couple, ages 23, Gayle and Paul Gross established themselves as residents of Hillsdale. As their family expanded, they moved several times, but elected to remain in Hillsdale for 60 years. Paul Gross succeeded in building an insurance brokerage firm, The NIA Group, which was headquartered in Paramus, New Jersey. Mr. Gross served as a Trustee of the Library from 2001-2007 and was Chairman of the Library’s capital campaign during the renovation and expansion project. The Gross family generously supported multiple endeavors, including the establishment of a playground at Beechwood Park, decorative lighting around Memorial Park, and other Borough agencies.
Library Director Dave Franz, recalls Mr. Gross’ penchant for education. “Paul continued to teach classes at Bergen Community College while managing his business and volunteering as a Library Board Trustee.” Franz said. “Libraries are the perfect compliment to self-improvement and lifelong learning. We are grateful for the future opportunities the Hillsdale Library can offer its patrons with this wonderful gift.”
