The dolls displayed here are from my mother’s collection of 144 dolls from around the world. The collecting began in 1924, when a family friend, a military man who had been stationed in China, gave my mother two Chinese opera dolls (not the two displayed here). They were joined by several dolls purchased by her parents in 1926 at the Philadelphia Sesqui-centennial Exposition One of these is here: the small doll from Japan. My grandmother and then my mother kept a record of the date, place of origin and the name of the purchaser of each doll added to the collection. Now the dolls are dispersed among children and grandchildren who treasure and enjoy them. – A friend of the Library
