Bowls and Woodland Creatures by Dave Franz

Come check out the woodturning creations of the library’s own Dave Franz. The exhibit, which will be on display starting November 1 in the glass cases in the library’s lobby, includes bowls made from a variety of woods, including walnut and cherry. And just for fun, the bowls are surrounded by whimsical characters fashioned from natural materials and found objects.

Woodturning is one of the many activities that Dave, library director and chief creative, enjoys. He explains, “Carefully navigating a razor-sharp blade against the grain of a hunk of raw wood spinning at 800 to 1200 revolutions per minute is both terrifying and meditative at the same time.”

Dave shares that he was inspired by the Hudson Valley Woodturners Association, which conducts pen turning workshops at the library during NJ Makers Day, held every March.* He credits Hillsdale resident Len Stambler for bringing the workshops to our event every year and encouraging him to develop his woodturning skills.

Most exhibit items are for sale. 50% of all sales will be donated to the library in support of the library’s mission, which is to help people pursue their passions.
