On Exhibit in July – Through the Lens: A Hillsdale Photography Club Showcase

Photography allows us to capture moments, tell stories, and share the way we see the world. Through the Lens: A Hillsdale Photography Club Showcase displays the work of members of the Hillsdale Photography Club, each bringing a unique perspective and style to the exhibit.

The collection features a diverse range of subjects—from iconic Hillsdale landmarks, community events, and local sports to landscapes, wildlife, travel, and scenes beyond our town’s borders. Together, these images reflect both the beauty of everyday life and the individual artistry of the photographers behind the lens.

While each photograph tells its own story, the exhibit celebrates a shared passion for the art of photography and the power of images to connect us to places, people and moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

We invite you to explore these perspectives and experience the world as seen through our lens.

When my kids were born, just about every parent told me the same thing: “Take pictures. It goes by so fast.” Boy, were they right.

Photography had already been a hobby of mine for years, so having a camera in my hands came naturally. What started with birthdays and family milestones soon grew into documenting every stage of my children’s lives.

As they became involved in sports, dance, school activities, and community events, I was usually the parent on the sidelines with the camera. Ironically, that’s how I recently met many of the members of the Hillsdale Photography Club.

I loved sharing those moments with teammates’ families, creating end-of-season highlight reels and retrospectives celebrating not only accomplishments, but also the friendships and memories along the way.

Today, that passion extends well beyond my own family. After living in Hillsdale for more than 50 years, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the town I call home and the people who make it special. Whether it’s youth sports, community celebrations, local traditions, or everyday life, you’ll often find me behind the camera, capturing the moments that tell Hillsdale’s story.

Photography has become my way of giving back to the community that has given so much to me—preserving its history, celebrating its people, and creating images families will treasure for years to come.

I’ve spent my career at the intersection of storytelling, design, and big moments, helping shape the narrative of the day’s news at The New York Times. That background in journalism taught me that the foundation of a great story is built on capturing the right moment at
the right time.

For me, those same instincts apply behind the lens. Whether I’m shooting a portrait, an event, or a landscape, my goal is to catch the spirit of the subject.

Hillsdale has been home to my family for over a decade, and we feel incredibly lucky to live just a short walk away from this wonderful library.

I’m also grateful to be a part of the Hillsdale Photography Club alongside the talented folks whose work you see displayed here. It’s an inspiring group, and we love to welcome new faces, so please reach out if you’re interested.

Robert’s love of photography began in elementary school when he received a Kodak 110 Instamatic camera as a gift. Since then, other hobbies, including sports, guitar, and cooking, have come and gone, but photography has remained a lifelong passion.

Over the years, Robert has photographed everything from sporting events and candid portraits to the interplay of light and shadow in everyday scenes. Most recently, his attention has turned to wildlife photography, with a particular fascination for bald eagles and hawks.

A Hillsdale resident for 20 years, Robert continues to explore the world through his camera, always searching for moments of beauty, character, and connection.
